for everyone
I was quite astounded  by Stephen King's opinion with Stephenie Meyer's writing style.

He compared Meyer to JK Rowling . According to this one of the best suspense writer, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good." (emphasis mine).

Oh well, he is entitled to his opinion but good heaven's his remarks are headlines. I have nothing against King.  I just think he just don't need to be that harsh.

Both Meyer and Rowling have similarities.

Both Rowling and Meyer's audience are the younger generation. Both are into fiction. Both are mothers who pursued their dreams of writing. Both have novels that have become famous and were adapted to the silverscreen.  But they do have different writing styles. JK have got her share of fame and will continue to be an influence. And now, Meyer managed to pushed her luck.

So much have been already said when the 'tweeny clumsy girl fell in love with the vampire saga' hit the bookstores and became a movie franchise. Okay it is not as verbose or literary as Ann Rice nor it is not so liberating (some commented that Bella just put feminism backwards)  or as entertaining as Harry Potter but it has its own merits too. We all know how difficult it is to write or find the exact words  and captivate the audience to continue reading.

So who's the better writer? Who captivates you more?

Oh well I'll let  you judge them. You are entitled to your own opinion, of course.

N.B. And with the young generation as Meyer and Rowling's audience, I salute them both for  encouraging this PSP-driven generation to go back into reading.

i would have been disappointed with stephen if he chose meyer over rowling. that would have astounded me.

for me, rowling is the WAY better writer. she's intellectually stimulating and entertaining.

Oh well! I like Rowling than Meyer, sana wala lang tounge-bashing remarks. You can give constructive criticisms naman diba? ehehehe
yeah. but maybe stephen king preferred to be blunt because he was disgusted with how much admiration meyer was gettting for her bad writing from youngsters.

..hhmmm...personally hindi ko pa nabsa lahat ng books (2 e-books pa lang) ni Meyer, so I can't judge the whole saga. But well.. being blunt is good. and akin lang is at least, nabuhay ang interes sa pagbabasa ulit. :D

haha, stephen king was brutal but he is also absolutely right. the twilight books suck as far as the quality of writing goes. what meyer had was a good story, which was ingeniously fashioned from people's daydreams and fantasies. the language, however, was problematic. but as it turns out, her story was so good that people liked it regardless of how badly it was written.

in my case, the only reason why i continued reading the books was because of the irresistible idea of edward cullen. and i think a lot of girls would agree with me on that one. LOL!

I haven't read any of the books yet, but I agree: it's a shame kids these days aren't reading.

Stephen King is entitled to his own opinion, of course. But Stephanie Meyer did what many supposedly good authors haven't done: introduce reading, in a way, to this generation.

I just hope more and more authors will write better books that will better encourage the non-reading public to explore literature.

i think one of the reasons why the PSP generation were engaged to read Stephanie Meyer was because she was able to communicate with them through her writing style and content. her language was easy to understand you could sweep through her books swiftly--a very ideal reading experience for today's generation, in view of their short attention span. no need to go the dictionary for new, difficult words and no need to have to be keen on understanding difficult concepts (meyer: edward cullen is a hypnotically handsome vampire. period.). this is not likely if you read umberto eco or stephen king (and to think he's pop).

yeah. let's hope these kids grow out of meyer. and let's hope meyer grows out of being her hyper-pop author-self and write better books. i wonder if she eats rice.

the irresistible idea of edward cullen
...yes, the idea of a "vegetarian" vampire is really irresistible. Despite the language used. A friend who read the book keeps on cursing under his breath when he read the "irrevocably blah blah"..para daw resignation letter.. haha
